Norovirus is here again, how should we respond?

2019-7-19 10,397

Recently, I was screened by the Norovirus infection incident of residents in Chaoyang District in Beijing. The virus that was originally circulating in autumn and winter was caught off guard in the hot summer. It is initially suspected that food-borne water pollution caused the accident.

01 What is norovirus

Norovirus is one of the main pathogens that cause acute gastroenteritis outbreaks worldwide. About 85% of acute, non-bacterial gastroenteritis outbreaks in the United States are related to norovirus. The incubation period is 24-48 hours, and the course of the disease is generally 2-3 days. The peak of detoxification is 1-3 days after the onset. There is currently no vaccine and no specific antiviral drugs.

03 Symptoms of Norovirus?

Gastroenteritis caused by norovirus has the characteristics of rapid onset, rapid spread, and wide coverage.

-The main symptoms

Nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping diarrhea. Some patients may also have symptoms such as headache, fever, chills, and muscle pain.

-Incubation period

Before a sudden onset, norovirus generally has an incubation period of 1-2 days in the body (the incubation period is as short as 12 hours and as long as 3 days).

Norovirus has rapidly become the leading cause of sporadic gastroenteritis in children and adults.

04 When is norovirus high?

In our country, norovirus infection generally occurs in autumn and winter, so it is also called “winter vomiting disease” or “gastrointestinal flu”. However, in recent years, the virus has come out before and after the onset of the season, so we cannot relax our vigilance.

05 How does norovirus spread?

Norovirus is mainly transmitted through the fecal-oral route, but also through contaminated water sources, food, objects, and air.

To put it simply, direct contact with the hands and mouth of a patient with norovirus, or even indirect contact with the patient’s sneezing and saliva, may be infected.

06 How to treat norovirus

Currently, there are no specific antiviral drugs, mainly symptomatic or supportive treatment, generally without antibiotics, and the prognosis is good. For norovirus, there are currently no specific antiviral drugs or vaccines that can be used for prevention. The occurrence of vomiting and diarrhea is mainly based on symptomatic treatment or supportive therapy.

07 How to prevent norovirus

Norovirus infection is mainly transmitted through the fecal-oral route, and the contaminated environment and objects, water sources, and food are the main transmission media. It can also be spread through the air, and dust particles with viruses in the air are also a medium that cannot be ignored. Comprehensive measures should be taken to prevent norovirus infection, including isolation and treatment of patients and cutting off the route of transmission. Disinfecting pollutants and killing viruses that pollute the external environment is an important preventive measure.

Generally preventive disinfection can be divided into drinking water disinfection, environmental surface disinfection and air disinfection.

Ultraviolet light is the broadest-spectrum bactericide in nature, and it can kill all kinds of harmful viruses. Norovirus is naturally no longer a problem.

Drinking water and ambient air disinfection can be treated with ultraviolet water treatment sterilizers and professional ultraviolet air sterilizers.

Surface disinfection, in an emergency, you can use a portable ultraviolet device, strong light irradiation for sterilization, or use a chlorine-containing solution for wiping, or use ultraviolet lamps for whole-house irradiation and surface disinfection when there is no one.

For families that have already been infected, on the basis of the preventive disinfection mentioned above, increase the time and frequency of disinfection to prevent cross-infection.

02 Who is susceptible to norovirus

First of all, don’t think that norovirus will not infect adults. In fact, everyone may be killed by norovirus.

Secondly, among all the population, children, the elderly, immunodeficiency and organ transplant patients are “high-risk and susceptible groups.”

Third, in recent years, the prevalence of norovirus infection among children in our country has increased. At present, children, especially those under the age of 5, who go to kindergarten, are the easiest group of people to be bullied by norovirus.
